Starbucks is giving away a free gift for one day only

New York

Starbucks hopes to attract customers with a small gift: a free reusable straw.

On Wednesday, anyone who purchases a cold craft beverage, such as an iced coffee or the new energy drinks, of any size, will receive a free, brightly colored reusable straw. The giveaway is part of Starbucks’ broader efforts to become more sustainable and hopefully generate more revenue.

The straws will be available in the U.S. and Canada while supplies last, handed out in cafes and via orders through third-party apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub.

Starbucks said the reusable straws are “compatible with the lid of Starbucks Cooler Cups and most reusable Starbucks Cooler Cups.” The stores phased out single-use plastic straws in 2020, instead offering biodegradable straws with “sippy cup” lids.

The chain has also ramped up discounts and promotions in recent months in an effort to boost sales after a disappointing quarter. Starbucks doesn’t often offer giveaways, aside from its annual holiday giveaway of free plastic red cups.

Sustainability is a focus for Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan. The chain is also rolling out new cold cups that use up to 20% less plastic compared to the current version.

The cups are part of ongoing sustainability efforts to halve waste and carbon emissions by 2030. Like other major companies, the chain says it wants to become less dependent on plastic, as the material is largely made from fossil fuels.
